    Planning on doing this journey solo. Do you think an emergency GPS locator is necessary like Spot or the ARC ResQLink?

    It certainly can’t hurt, as in many areas, you’ll be out of cell reception and you may go the entire day without anyone coming by. That said, in the height of summer, you have a fair amount of travelers going through the national forests. We carried one for peace of mind, though we use it for all our other backcountry activities as well.
