I just rode this a couple days ago with a buddy.

We planned to stay at the first recommended camp site on the map, but it was still pretty early in the day, so we carried on. We ended up at the County Park campground also on the map. It’s getting late in the season, so we had it mostly to ourselves, and it turned out great. We were next to the river, and the woman gave us a deal.

This was our first overnight bike trip, and are by no means experts at this. We found the big ascent to be really tough, especially because it was lightly raining half the time. Between the gravel, the grade, and the mud, our wheels were spinning out at times, and we had to do a little walking. That said, once we got to the top, we were cruising, and could have easily made it to Tillamook on day one.

We had 37cm and 40cm tires. We made it, but 2″ knobbies would have been nice at times.

Also worth mentioning, that if you’re going to find your own place to camp, the further you get towards the County Park campground, the busier the road gets with trucks (non-logging), hunters, etc.
