I recently rode the Deschutes trail with my daughter for a night of camping. One thing that no one seemed to mention about the route is that on the other side of the river is a busy freight rail line. In the course of the night there were 4 trains on the track. We camped near mile 12, where there is a siding and many of the trains have to pull out to allow another to pass. They make A LOT of noise, which is amplified by the sheer walls of the canyon that follows the track. So if you are planning on camping, you probably want to avoid pitching your tent in the 10 – 14 mile stretch.

I remember several years ago on a backpacking trip I was also surprised by a train passing in the evening. I think we only saw 1 or 2 then entire weekend, so it’s possible the train has variable frequency. Bummer!
